Why Positivity Is So Important

Connecting Together

We build relationships through connecting with one another.  How do we connect with one another?  I find the best way to do this is through supporting one another, empathizing, and allowing an openness and vulnerability with one another.  Also, generosity goes a long way as well.

While I know that I am not perfect in any of these areas and there are certainly ways to improve, I am amazed at how many people lack basic social skills.  We all have our bad days when we are frustrated, agitated, and just want to be left alone.  All the same, I still can’t completely comprehend how we can be so disrespectful sometimes.  Many of us are completely unaware of the negative impact we may be having on others.

Living a Positive Life

Of course, we should all strive to not have a negative impact on each other as human beings, but a positive one.  This can be fairly easy so long as we practice it regularly.  If we are open, kind, and genuinely interested in the conversations we are having with one another, I am very confident that we will be happier.

Sometimes my friends will give me a hard time.  “Pat, you’re too positive!” Alas, perhaps I am guilty and perhaps I can be a little naïve sometimes when it comes to certain topics.  This isn’t to say that I don’t educate myself.  I am very aware of the many problems and injustices that take place around the world. The world can be a cruel place, but it can also be quite an amazing place as well.

It’s important to recognize the negative, and then work towards something positive to change it.  Complaining, justifying, and blaming won’t do anybody any good and will just fuel more negative feelings like anger, hatred, and sadness.  While it’s important to feel these feelings from time to time, it’s advisable not to live in these spaces.  We are not helping anyone if we do so.

The One Thing Worse Than Negativity

While negativity isn’t the ideal place to be mentally, it isn’t worse than indifference.  This is where we are heading in our digital age.  We are becoming increasingly indifferent.  Sometimes it can feel like so many of us don’t care about anything.  We walk like zombies throughout our days, our weeks, our months, and our years.  Indifference does not inspire.  Indifference does not allow us to be positive.  Indifference will get us from point B, back to point A.

JK Rowling is quoted as saying, “Indifference and neglect often do much more damage than outright dislike.” There is another quote that goes, “Love will find a way. Indifference will find an excuse.” How true it is!

I’m not one to preach positivity or say that everyone should be positive all the time.  That would make the world boring.  What I am saying is that positive energy generates some good flow.  I know I enjoy myself much more when the atmosphere is friendly, positive, and welcoming.  A positive plus a positive makes a positive.  If we add one negative person to the equation, it turns the whole group negative.  And two negatives don’t make a positive in this scenario.

Although our news and media will tell you differently, I believe our world has many, many, many more good people than bad.  As our society is pieced together, however, the negative people who do awful things get all the attention.  But if we can continue to see the world as it is and dream with eyes wide open, just like that amazing song from The Greatest Showman, we will recognize that there is a lot of good to receive and therefore a lot of good to give.
